Optometry is an autonomous healthcare profession that is regulated (licensed/registered). Optometrists are the primary health & vision care practitioners who provide comprehensive eye and vision care, which includes refraction and dispensing, detection/diagnosis and management of disease in the eye and the rehabilitation of conditions of the visual system
Course Details
Bachelor of Optometry is a regular full-time course that anyone can pursue after completing a higher secondary examination with physics, chemistry, biology, or mathematics.
The duration of the course is four years including the last year of internship in any hospital or eye institute of repute. After four years, an optometrist requires a license to practice.

Department of Optometry at ITMVU is a proud member of WCO. In coordination with WCO, our department aims to help in the development of Optometry on a global scale. Students of our department are nurtured in a way so that their skills as optometrists match global standards. Our department supports WCO’s vision by serving the eye care needs of the public and making quality eye care accessible to all. This is achieved by routine eye check-up camps set up by our department where students under the guidance of the faculty members are provided with exposure to function as a practitioner.

An optometrist offers an examination of the internal and external structure of the eye and treatment of visual health. They can prescribe eyeglasses and lenses. Ophthalmologists on the other hand provide surgical and medical care of the eyes. Besides these, one can choose teaching as a career after gaining practical experience and helping to train students to become sound optometrists.

Infrastructure at Optometry Lab-ITMVU
At ITMVU, we have an eye clinic where we carry out basic vision tests (visual acuity test), refraction test, slit lamp exam, glaucoma test, IOP test, fundus test, colour vision test, RAF ruler test, pinhole test, worth dot test, duo-chrome test to name a few. Besides this, we have various kinds of instruments such as Phoropter manual, Tonometers Schioetz manual, Contact lenses kit, Bausch Lomb keratometer manual, Auto Refractometer, Ophthalmic Chair Unit, Two-Step Slit Lamp, Streak Retinoscope, Direct Ophthalmoscope, Lensometer manual, LED Vision Chart, (RAF) Ruler, Trial Set Lenses, and Snellen chart.
Students are provided with an opportunity to interact with patients and perform eye tests on them. Thus, our students are confident when they step out in the real world of Optometry
