How to Get Admission in B Tech Courses?

Are you aspiring to take up a Engineering course and have a lot of questions such as which Engineering course to choose? Which college will be the best? what is the difference between a B E and a B Tech. Well, in that case, this article is meant for you.

Bachelor of Tech/ B Tech Course is a professional undergraduate level engineering degree programme which is awarded to a candidate after they complete four years of study in the field that they chose during their course. India has been the land of Engineers and the B Tech course is one of the most popular professional courses chosen by most aspiring students.

Let’s first understand the difference between B E & B Tech

Engineeering course is best suited for someone who wants a more practical-based curriculum and wishes to explore new technologies. B Tech course is a four-year program and there are many streams of specialization. To get admission in a B Tech course you need to have a PCB or a PCMB combination of your 10+2 and you must appear for entrance exams such as JEE and exams held by colleges offering B Tech course. Whereas, the Bachelors in Engineering (BE) program offers a similar curriculum to students as the one offered by a B Tech course. So much so that there is an overlap between the eligibility criteria, job opportunities and placements. However, the key difference between the B E and B Tech course is the actual course material and the methodology used to teach the students.

While BE is theoretical and knowledge oriented in nature while B Tech course is data-driven and skill oriented.

Both the courses are of 4-years duration with 8 semesters, in case you are a diploma student than the course duration for you will be 3 years.

What are the eligibility criteria for a B Tech course?

To be eligible to apply for this  course a student must have:

  • Passed the class 12 exam from a recognized state, central or an international education board
  • The student must have Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics as core subjects in their 10+2.
  • They must also have an aggregate score of 60%

Alongside this, the student must have also appeared for a national or an institute-specific entrance exam.

BTech Entrance Exams

All technical programs in India are governed by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and the National Board of Accreditation (NBA) and the admissions to a B Tech course take place through national or state-level engineering entrance exams.

Most students apply for the following entrance exams across India.

JEE Main: The JEE Main exams are conducted by the National Testing Agency mainly for admissions into IIITs, Government Funded Technical Institutes (GFTIs) & NITs. The curriculum for JEE Main includes two subjects viz. BE/BTech and BArch/BPlan

JEE Advanced - JEE Advanced is a mandatory national level exam required to get admission into IIT. A student can enter this examination only after they have qualified for the JEE Main exam.

VITEEE - VITEE is a national-level entrance conducted by the Vellore Institute of Technology, which is one of the most popular institutes in India offering a diverse range of Engineering courses through 4 different campuses across the country.

MHT CET - MH CET is the common entrance test held by state of Maharashtra and students can apply for colleges offering B Tech course in Maharashtra through this exam

TS EAMCET - Just like MH CET, TS EAMCET offers admissions to students for colleges offering B Tech course in the state of Telangana.

What is the admission process for the B Tech course?

Most colleges offering Engineering courses follow a similar admissions process. Here is how most of the admissions process looks like.

  • B Tech Course aspirants must appear for 10+2 exams or an equivalent exam
  • Students must also appear for national-level engineering entrance exams.
  • Students can also appear at other entrances exams such as:
  • State Level Entrance Exams:
  • MHT CET
  • AP EAMCET
  • KEAM
  • TS EAMCET
  • WBJEE
  • University/College Level Entrance Exams:
  • UPESEAT
  • VITEEE
  • BITSAT
  • SRMJEEE
  • Most engineering entrance exams are conducted between May-July
  • After the results are declared the students can start shortlisting and applying for colleges
  • During this phase, the student will get an opportunity to choose a college and a subject as per their preferences
  • This will be followed by the counseling and seat allotment process
  • Once the seat is allotted the student will then have to visit the college and complete the admission formalities.
